The Coalition Government has announced that the Equality Act will be implemented during October 2010.
The Act will bring together nine different pieces of legislation and the Government believe it will make it easier for businesses to comply with discrimination law. The Equality Act will pave the way for a number of provisions that will protect disabled individuals from discrimination and tackle the gender pay gap, amongst other things.
Theresa May, Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities, comments: “By making the law easier to understand, the Equality Act will help business treat staff fairly and meet the needs of a diverse customer base. The law will be easier to understand and better able to protect people from discrimination.
“Implementing the Equality Act to the planned timetable makes clear our commitment to equality. A successful economy needs the full participation of all its citizens and we are committed to implementing the Act in the best way for business.”
In conjunction with the British Chambers of Commerce, the Equality and Diversity Forum and Citizens Advice, The Government Equalities Office (GEO) will publish guides to support the implementation of the Act. In addition, there are also a series of ‘Quick Start’ guides to summarise key changes to the law.
