A former senior NHS manager has been awarded £187,000 in a compensation case brought against her employer, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Linda Sturdy who is now 60, claimed she was discriminated against for being “to old.” After revealing that she was 3 years from retirement age, she was told by the interviewer “I didn’t realise you were so old.” The job was subsequently offered to a younger colleague with 35 years less experience and Linda Sturdy was sacked in May 2008 after refusing to take a junior role.
The tribunal said that the trust had acted in a “high-handed, malicious, oppressive and insulting” manner. The tribunal went on to award Linda Sturdy £147,000 to cover lost salary and pension rights in addition to £40,000 in damages she received last year.
Director of Human Resources, Jackie Green at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said “The trust has accepted that mistakes were made. We have looked closely into what happened to learn lessons.”
