According to a recent CIPD/KPMG ‘Employer Focus’ survey of 800 respondents, only 40% of organisations offer working fathers 2 weeks pay at or near the full rate of pay, 24% offer no paid paternity beyond the statutory 2 week level.
The UK coalition government have committed to introduce flexible parental leave, involving the ability to transfer leave from mothers to fathers. However the findings of the survey cast doubt on how ready fathers and employers are for just such a development.
Employee Relations Advisor at the CIPD, Mike Emmott, said “If flexible parental is going to become a reality, we need a step-change in the reward policies of UK organisations that encourage more fathers to take their statutory rights. This is something that will only be achieved through cultural change-and legislation is emphatically not the answer.”
